5 weeks Pregnancy

My wife was 5 weeks pregnant. We have to avoid it now. Our first child have only 1 year old. We consult a doctor and he said to wait for another 1 week and will do a scanning and after that medicine will start. I was confused that why we wait for another 1 week? We worried that is it possible to avoid 6 weeks pregnancy with medicine, is it complicated..? please help me doctor
