Dr. Sridhar Baratan

Dr Sridhar Baratan has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya for 10 years, where he was responsible for the development and running of a tertiary level Centre of excellence in Cataract surgery and Community Ophthalmology in suburb in South Chennai (the Rural Eye Hospital, now rechristened C U Shah Sankara Nethralaya). He, along with a colleague, started the surgical facility there in 2006, and from a humble beginning of 30-40 surgeries a month, have brought it up to its current average of 180-plus cases per month. After leaving Nethralaya in 2013, he has been part of an organization called Beyond Eye Care, and have been instrumental in setting up and running a State-of-the-art Eye hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the able guidance of his mentor, Dr Rashmin Gandhi. Currently, the hospital is seeing more than 120 patients a day, and is well on its way to achieve our projected goal of 5000-plus surgeries in the year 2014-15. On his return to India, he accepted the post of Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist, Refractive, LASIK, and Phaco surgeon, and Head, Maxivision Eye Hospitals, Tamil Nadu. He is now a Consultant with Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, with a special interest in Phacoemulsification, Refractive Surgery, LASIK, and Glaucoma.
