1. What are the advantages of dental scaling?
Dental scaling helps in reducing the pockets that develop between the tooth and the gums. This helps in reduction of bone and tooth loss and also decreases the risk of development of periodontal disease like gum inflammation, tooth caries between two teeth and tooth discolouration.
2. Who needs dental scaling?
Everyone should undergo scaling at regular intervals for preserving gum and tooth health. Certain people who develop plaque and tartar frequently should undergo more often. Scaling should be done once at least every 6 months.
3. Is there any special care needed after scaling?
After dental scaling, regular use of mouth washes is recommended for a few days to weeks to prevent early development of plaque. No other special care is needed.
4. Is dental scaling a painful procedure?
Scaling is a relatively painless procedure. However, some discomfort may be experienced when the plaque is too deep seated within the gums or if the person is undergoing the procedure for the first time. People who have excessive tooth sensitivity too might face some sensation, but it's mild discomfort, not pain.
5. Can I opt for dental scaling treatment if I have diabetes?
If the blood sugar level is well controlled, diabetic patients can undergo scaling. In poorly controlled sugar levels, there is a risk of delayed healing and hence it is not recommended until blood sugar is within optimum limits.
