Description
NovoMix 50 Penfill is used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (a condition with high blood sugar levels). This medicine is a combination of rapid-acting and intermediate-acting analogues of insulin that consistently works for several hours after injection and provides effective blood sugar control throughout the day. NovoMix 50 Penfill may result in low blood sugar levels, and you may feel hungry, irritable, dizzy, anxious or shaky. Consult your doctor if these symptoms persist or become severe. Avoid consumption of alcohol as it may lower your blood sugar levels. NovoMix 50 Penfill should be administered exactly as advised by your doctor. This medicine is injected under your skin. Take it at the same time every day to maintain a constant level of this medicine in your body. Do not skip doses or discontinue the treatment without consulting your doctor as it may cause an increase in your blood sugar levels. NovoMix 50 Penfill is not recommended if you are allergic to it. Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing liver or kidney problems. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, take this medication only if prescribed by your doctor.

General warnings

Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition of increased levels of ketones (blood acids). NovoMix 50 Penfill is not recommended for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Your doctor will determine suitable treatment options based on your clinical condition.

Subcutaneous use only

NovoMix 50 Penfill is meant for subcutaneous administration (under the skin) only. The long duration of action of this medicine is dependent on a subcutaneous administration. It should not be administered intravenously (into the veins) or intramuscularly (into the muscles).

Hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar levels)

NovoMix 50 Penfill may cause low blood sugar levels. Hence, regular monitoring of your blood sugar levels is recommended. Your doctor may advise you to carry a sugar candy to counteract the effects of low blood sugar levels.

Use with other insulins

NovoMix 50 Penfill should not be diluted or mixed with any other insulin or solution as it may alter the effects of other insulins when administered together and/or increase the risk of side effects.

Allergic Reactions at the injection Site

Injection site reactions that may occur with NovoMix 50 Penfill include redness, pain, itching, swelling or hives (itchy, painful eruptions that sting). Continuous rotation of the injection site within a given area is recommended to help reduce or prevent these reactions. These reactions usually resolve within a few days to a few weeks.

Driving or operating machines

Your ability to drive vehicles or operate machines may be affected due to low or high blood sugar levels. Hence, avoid activities that require mental alertness if you experience any symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, etc. while taking this medicine.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of NovoMix 50 Penfill, contact your doctor for further instructions. You should not use more than one dose in a 24-hour period unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

Overdose

Seek immediate medical attention or contact your doctor if an overdose of NovoMix 50 Penfill is suspected. Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar levels) may occur in case of an overdose with symptoms such as extreme weakness, blurred vision, sweating, trouble speaking, tremors, dizziness, confusion, etc. In cases of mild hypoglycemic episodes, oral glucose or sugary products can be used to avoid severe hypoglycaemia.

Carefully follow all the instructions given by your doctor. Do not administer NovoMix 50 Penfill in larger or smaller amounts than prescribed. Administer NovoMix 50 Penfill 15 minutes before your meal. However, for type 2 diabetes, the dose may also be taken after the meal. Never share an injection pen, cartridge, or syringe with another person, even if the needle has been changed. Avoid the use of this medicine if the solution is cloudy, coloured or contains solid particles. Avoid the discontinuation of this medicine without consulting your doctor as it may increase your blood sugar levels. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and frequent follow-up visits with your doctor is recommended so that your doctor can evaluate your condition.
