PCOS is also called polycystic ovarian syndrome and it is not diagnosed by Ultrasound alone. To diagnose PCOS: at least 2 of the following 3 criteria need to be fulfilled: and we need to rule out other things: 1. Irregular/infrequent menstrual cycles or infrequent ovulation 2. Signs of androgen excess: excessive hair growth or excess acne 3. Ultrasound picture of PCOS: either more than 20 follicles in ovary or ovarian volume more than 10cc. Just an ultrasound finding of PCOS does not mean one has PCOS. And many normal women can have Ultrasound picture of PCOS. Other causes of PCOM on Ultrasound include thyroid and prolactin disturbances. We need to see whole clinical picture ans decide on managemant. In PCOS patients, the first line of treatment is lifestyle modification. This is central to the treatment and the most important part of management. Any other treatment is ineffective if lifestyle is not healthy. Healthy lifestyle also helps in preventing and treating a variety of other health problems. Please pay heed to these.
