Why doctor prescribes tablets for -ve TB
My mother had undergone biopsy surgery 40 days before, Because doctor want to confirm the abnormal tumour grown in her neck is cancer or TB. So, The tumour had sent for biopsy and culture test. Between doctor said that its not cancer but may suspect for TB and prescribed medication for 60 days. After 45 days culture result came as negative for TB. My question is even the result came negative for TB doctor said to continue the tablets for my mother for next 3 months. Why doctor said to continue?

Dear Patient, Your doubt is correct but one important thing one have to keep in mind that one cannot depend 100% on lab reports. One have to repeat it a number of times. You may find +ve in one lab and -back test in other laboratory.Overall diagnosis is important and accordingly goes the treatment.

Hello, let me ask u where is the swelling exactly and what is the size, is it a swelling or a lymphnode?? In a country like India where tuberculosis is more predominant and extrapulmonary TB most common site is cervical lymphnodes.. So if it is negative for tumors then it is likely to be TB, n culture is most specific test but not a sensitive test that's y suspecting TB he continued it that's it.

Dear , dont worry .that's why doctor doesn't rely on reports and without detailed history cannot prescribe medicine . Its called as clinical diagnosing sometimes reports normal but still clinical ( symptoms )problems fits into one specific disease then without proven have to treat that disease which is strongly suspected . its called as risk benifts ratio has to decide doctor . otherwise pathologist and pharmacist has done  the  Work of treatment  why need of doctor , So dont worry fallowed your doctor , clinically patient may be having tb .

It is likely that your mother shows symptoms of tuberculosis due to which the treatment may have been started and although the pathology suggested otherwise due to the clinical representation may have suggested the doctor to make the decision. I would require further information on the case to give a specific reason.
