What are the causes of acanthosis nigricans

I'm a diabetic person. It looks like this silly health problem is causing a lot of other problems as well. I have been noticing a dark patch around my armpits. It looks ridiculous when I've to wear sleeveless shirts. What are the causes of acanthosis nigricans? Can I do something to lighten the dark patch?
