Weird anxiety symptoms
My father suffered a stroke a month ago. It was mild and silent but the whole fiasco took a heavy toll on us as he was very ill. He is doing better now but ever since he has been doing better I am having many stress related symptoms. Initially I was feeling tightness in temples and jaws. When it subsided I faced mild tightness in chest and lightheaded ness. All these symptoms were making me more worried that I was having a stroke too and it scared me further. But as I distracted myself these symptoms got better. After a couple weeks and an outing for a weekend I felt better and all problems went away. But now that I have come back and stared normal work, even the slightest stress is triggering palpitation and chest tightness. Even if someone utters the word stroke, i feel lightheaded, i cant concentrate and there is discomfort in my chest. I feel like I'm developing some sort of anxiety, is that it. How to get better?

You are right, the symptoms do sound like anxiety. Anxiety can be understood as a response of the body to an anticipatory fear turning true in the future. That anticipated event that one fears acts like a trigger to the symptoms of anxiety in one's body. In this case it seems like the trigger for your anxiety are physiological symptoms associated with heart and stroke.
Next Steps
In order to treat the symptoms of anxiety, we need to address the trigger of anxiety. You will have to identify all the sources of triggers in your environment and develop strategies to effectively deal with them. Taking medications will help if the anxiety is affecting your everyday functioning a lot. but medications alone will not help you. In your case just seeing a therapist will help; because discussing and talking about the source of your anxiety is another way of dealing with anxiety. Yet at the same time there are a lot of free and paid resources online that you can look into if you do not want to go for therapy. Because you can efficiently help yourself through this too. A few strategies that will help include practicing relaxation techniques when in an anxiety provoking situation. Then later journaling about your experience,  the situation that you were in and the outcome of the situation after practicing deep breathing will help in learning more realistic response toward the triggers in the environment as against feeling anxious due to them. Practicing these two steps again and again will help you in healthily coping with all of it. I understand that it's easier said than done. But all you need to remind yourself at that time is you are strong and you can take care of yourself. And that nothing bad is happening (especially once you have ruled out presence of any physical illnesses). most importantly try to see the situation as it is without your fearful thoughts and perceptions. Hope this helps, Warm Regards.
Health Tips
It is very important that you get a health checkup done in order to accurately diagnose your problem and rule out any physical issues of the body.

Hi... You need to first undergo a medical assessment by a doctor (physician/cardiologist) to ensure that these symptoms do not have a physiological base and only then we can attribute them to psychological factors. Severe anxiety may produce physical symptoms like you have mentioned but we first need to rule out the physiological factors. Treatment of anxiety includes medication and/or psychotherapy.
Next Steps
Consult a doctor (physician/cardiologist) first and then a Psychologist for Counselling. CBT along with Lifestyle Guidance is required.

Hi, thank you for sharing. I am sorry that you are currently struggling with stress and anxiety. As you correctly identified, this can majorly be because of what your father went through a month ago. Glad he is doing much better now. Anxiety is about either living in the past or in the future. To experience and enjoy your present, you have to be aware and make conscious effort. You may want to try to rationalise your thought each time something worries you (example- if you think of your father's stroke, remind yourself that it was in the past and it is now over/ okay). For anxiety, feel free to try : 1. Deep breathing exercises (guided practices available on YouTube) 2. Grounding techniques right before or during panic 3. Yoga/ tai chi 4. Journaling your thoughts and fears 5. Reaching out to a trusted adult 6. Consistent sleep wake routine 7. A healthy balanced and nutritious diet 8. Check your vit D/ vit b12 levels 9. Counseling/ psychotherapy with a psychologist 10. Medication from a psychiatrist (if need be) For daily mental health tips and insights, follow @TherapywithShaurya on Instagram- under the "guide" section there, you will also find details to manage anxiety. Hope this helps, take good care.
