Hello Doctors,
I need a second opinion regarding my 4-year-old son.
About three months ago, I noticed a small, painless lump near his left ear in the parotid region. It was about the size of a chickpea. Over the next few weeks, it slowly became a little larger, but he had no pain, fever, weight loss, or any other symptoms. He remained active, playful, and ate normally.
Our ENT doctor advised an ultrasound and FNAC. After the FNAC, the swelling increased, and pus/fluid developed. The doctor prescribed antibiotics, and the redness and swelling have reduced, but the lump is still present.
The ENT surgeon has now recommended a small surgery to drain the pus and take a biopsy from the parotid gland. I am very worried because my son is only 4 years old, and I want to avoid surgery unless it is absolutely necessary.
Could this still be an infection that may improve with medicines? Is a biopsy really necessary? Is it reasonable to get a second ENT opinion before surgery?
