Drinking a small amount of old water from a thermos kept for a month is very unlikely to cause poisoning, but it can irritate the throat and taste buds, which explains the metallic taste, itching, and discomfort while eating. This happens due to bacterial growth or residue from the bottle lining. You should drink plenty of fresh water, do warm salt-water gargles 2–3 times a day, avoid spicy or very hot/cold food for a day, and you may take a simple antacid if there is burning. There is no need to panic—this usually settles within 24–48 hours. If you develop vomiting, fever, severe pain, breathing difficulty, or swelling, see a doctor immediately; otherwise, rest and monitor.
