Suffocating feeling usually arises either secondary to lung congestion or due to constriction of the airways. Congestion seen in cardiac problems and constriction in asthma.

Suffocation specially at night disturbing sleep is more in favour of cardiac disease rather than respiratory although only symptom analysis is not sufficient to come to the conclusion.Please consult a physician in your locality as soon a possible.
