Sputnik V second dose
It is said that because the second dose of Sputnik V uses adenovirus 5 vector, it increases chances of getting infected by HIV. Is this true?

A decade back two trials for an HIV vaccine were attempted using AD5 vector which concluded in their safety stage that increased infection rates were seen in the population of uncircumcised male practicing unprotected (no condoms) insertive anal sex in the first 18 months post vaccination with an HIV1 positive partner. The trials were urged to stop and discontinue after that. The trials (STEP and Phambili) also said that this risk wanes off in 18 months post vaccination and there is no increased risk for HIV infection after this period. There was no added risk seen for females It was a failed attempt at making an HIV vaccine. Recently last year a paper was published cautioning the use of ad5 vector based vaccines like Sputnik V and cansino that turning people seropositive for ad5 may put them at increased risk of getting infected with HIV. It was a caution based on a decade old step and Phambili trial. But I hope you can understand the extrapolation here. I suggest my male patients who have an HIV positive partner to stay away from Sputnik V and choose Chadox1 based covishield. I advise my patients who are young Indian females to opt for covaxin over covishield all of this is based on risk reduction based on research studies published in authentic journals, but these associations which we talk about are not fully proven. Follow a doctor who stays updated, he will explain you. Your concerns are genuine.
