Small leukoplakia patch on tongue

Hello doctor, Yesterday I visited an ENT specialist with my father. He has been experiencing burning sensation on his tongue and pain over a specific area. On examination, the doctor diagnosed a small patch of leukoplakia on the left lateral border of his tongue. I would like to understand: 1. What could be the possible causes of this leukoplakia? 2. Is this a serious condition? 3. What further tests or follow-up steps should we take? 4. Are there lifestyle changes or precautions (diet, oral hygiene, avoiding irritants) we should follow? Any guidance on the urgency of treatment or monitoring would be appreciated. Thank you.
