Shingles are herpetic infections along the nerves. usually will last for 4 weeks and could be very painful. you could ask him to take paracetamol to relieve pain or if he is on painkillers no need to add more. donot rub or scratch the lesions. cold compress would work to relieve pain. let the lesions air dry. donot apply antibiotic ointments. he can apply calamine lotion to soothen the itch to an extent.
