Retainers & crowns
As per my dentist, she says I can have the permanent retainers for life long. As there was a gap in my 2 upper front teeth & in future it may come again. But I also consulted a doc & he said maximum they can be for 3 yrs. Can anyone guide me about this. Also I wanted to knw about zirconium crowns & how useful are they?

Even though permanent retainers help in stabilizing the teeth in its new position, provided they dont come off. If they do then there is a tendency for a relapse. So longer you have the retainers the better. If you can Suppliment that with a all clear removable retainer then it would definetly serve its purpose. Zirconia crowns has an added advantage of being metal free and when esthetics is of concern.

Hi..fixed retainer should be worn for one to five years only based on case not lifetime. Zirconia crowns are the best crowns available in dentistry now. They are little expensive but they are biocompatible, esthetically best and durable. Regards

If your retainers are permanent, they are normally bonded to the back of your teeth. While 3 years is the minimum you should wear your retainers, keeping them permanently is a better option, especially if recommended by your orthodontist. Since you had a gap between your teeth, chances of relapse in the future are possible. (Especially in women, pregnancy, menopause and other hormone related conditions also affect gums and may show tooth movement). Zirconia crowns are metal free, tooth coloured crowns which have high strength and better esthetics than conventional metal-ceramic crowns
