Regestrone CR 10 tablet

I have pcos problem but used to get regular periods until last month when I started spotting on 14th June and it has not stopped till now. Doctor prescribed me Regestrone CR 10 tablet today and asked me to take 1 tablet daily for 20 days. What will this tablet do will it stop my spotting? And is it a birth control pill?
