MOST COMMON CAUSES
1.
Vitamin Deficiencies (very common)
Especially:
Vitamin B12, Iron, Folate (B9)
These cause: Red, smooth “glossy” tongue, Burning sensation, Fatigue / weakness.
Treatment:
Take a B-complex supplement
If B12 is low - B12 1500 mcg/day for 2–3 months
Iron supplements if iron is low (only after testing)
2. Fungal Infection (Oral Thrush)
Symptoms: Burning, redness, Sometimes white coating, Worse after eating spicy, sour foods
Treatment: Antifungal gel: clotrimazole 1%, miconazole gel, or nystatin drops,Rinse mouth after every meal, Avoid
sugar for a few days
3. Allergy / Irritation
From: Toothpaste (SLS), mouthwash, Spicy food, acids, Pan masala / tobacco, Dental fillings or dentures
Treatment: Switch to SLS-free toothpaste (e.g., Sensodyne Fresh Gel / Himalaya), Stop irritants for 2–4 weeks
4. Chronic Dry Mouth
Due to: Dehydration, Anxiety, Mouth breathing,
Diabetes,Side-effects of some medications
Treatment: Sip water frequently, Sugar-free chewing gum,Get blood sugar checked if needed
5. Acid Reflux (Silent GERD) Acid can irritate the tongue for years
Treatment: Avoid late meals, Reduce tea/coffee, Pantoprazole / omeprazole
6. Burning Mouth Syndrome - If all tests are normal and no infection/irritation is found.Common in stress, anxiety, hormonal changes.
Treatment: Alpha-lipoic acid, Clonazepam, Stress management
1. Get these blood tests (very important):
CBC
Vitamin B12
Iron profile
Folate
Fasting
sugar
Thyroid (
TSH)
2. Stop irritants for 2 weeks
Spicy food
Sour food
Mouthwash with alcohol
Tobacco/pan
Change toothpaste to mild one
3. Try these at home
Honey on tongue 2×/day
Glycerin application
Cold milk before sleep
B-complex tablet daily (e.g., Becosules-Z)
See a Doctor if
Burning for years with no relief
Weight loss, ulcers, white/red patches
Diabetic symptoms
Thrush not improving
