Ma'am burs are sterilised after every use but there is no effective method of sterilising burs as they are very much prone to corrosion, so if you feel that you want to be operated with a new bur then you can ask your dentist to use .
First of all please do not generalise the statement, not all dentists fall into that category. To address your second query if you read through fine lines of scientific literature it clearly states that there is no effective method of sterilisation of burs and also they are prone to corrosion. Conclusion it is meant for single use only.
Next Steps
As a patient it is your right to ask for a new one before the procedure begins and as a dentist I make sure that I follow good asepsis in my clinical practice.
Please do not generalize isolated incidents (if at all they occur) to all the dentists...... sterilization is a process which is not meant only for the patient's health but for the doctors well being also..... most doctors use the burs only once..... Burs can be used again if they have not corroded or become blunt, and there are mechanisms to do that..... it is not mandatory to do the sterilization procedures in the operatory itself..... the best way to sterilize a bur is autoclaving and that is done at a very high temperature and hence is done in a separate area..... if you do not trust the sterlization in a clinic, be frank to your dentist and ask, before making any conclusions..... I believe any dentist would be more than happy to show you the sterlization protocols that they follow.....
Health Tips
what you don't see or what you don't get to see doesn't necessarily fall under the category of something that is not happening.....
I am sure you must have been to many restaurants but you would have hardly seen any chef preparing all the food in front of your eyes....
