Since there is a history of fecal impaction, it is very important to maintain soft, regular stools long-term to prevent recurrence. About your medications: * Duphalac (lactulose) is safe for long-term use, especially in elderly patients * It can be continued daily for several weeks to months, and then gradually reduced based on bowel regularity * The goal is 1 soft stool daily or at least every alternate day without straining How to adjust: * If stools are soft and regular → gradually reduce the dose * If constipation recurs → continue or increase slightly as needed Additional advice: * Ensure adequate hydration (2–2.5 litres/day) * Take a fiber-rich diet (fruits, vegetables, oats, isabgol if needed) * Maintain regular toilet habits (fixed timing, avoid delaying urge) * Avoid dependence on multiple laxatives together unless prescribed Important: * Occasional 1–2 day gap can be normal if stool is soft * Watch for warning signs: persistent constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting, or bleeding In summary: Duphalac can be safely continued and tapered slowly—there is no fixed short duration, especially after fecal impaction. Prevention of hard stool is the key.

That depends on the habits you have to accommodate. Take a high fibre diet and less protein diet. If that goes well you can slowly discontinue medication.
Next Steps
change food habits
