Post nephrectomy followup
I had undergone right laparoscopic nephrectomy in 2011 due to hydro nephrotic non functioning kidney. From then every year I am consulting Urologists for annual check ups. This year in the ultrasound my left kidney demonstrates compensatory hypertrophy measuring 12x5.7, my doctor said it's a very good sign. What i forgot to ask my doctor is that due to the increase in size of kidney am I prone to Blood pressure?? Are there any side effects??

Hello there. I can understand your concern. Compensatory hypertrophy is a normal mechanism because your one kidney has to handle all the work of two kidneys. .don't have to worry about it. Yes, you are at a slightly higher risk for developing high Blood pressure. Consult your nephrologist regularly for further evaluation and management. Best regards.

Compensatory hypertrophy is expected in such cases. Certain people with single kidney are at a slightly higher risk of BP. Suggest monitoring BP , Urine routine and S. Creatinine on a regular basis. Avoid certain pain killers like NSAID's  (eg diclofenac)
