Thank you for your question.
Severe period pain is common but it usually responds at least partially to Mefenamic acid taken three times a day during periods. If this is not the case you may wish to see a gynaecologist specialising in endoscopy so any other causes can be ruled out. A recent study has shown good results with the Mirena intrauterine system in managing severe period pain in young girls. The combined oral contraceptive pill also helps to reduce the pain producing chemicals that the uterus normally produces. Alternatively you may wish to try acupuncture and homeopathy for this before proceeding to surgical management. As you can see there are several options other than painkillers. Sometimes it may take 3 months or so to see the result of treatments like the pill or even the Mirena System. Do have a discussion with your gynaecologist about what other alternatives they have to offer.
You may also wish to consider a dietary supplement with zinc, selenium and magnesium and also Omega 3 fatty acid supplement. This again can take up to 3 months for you to feel the result.
