Ovarian cystectomy
I had an ovary removed due to a 5.5 cm cyst, the surgeon said the ovary was completely replaced by cyst. What are the indications for this and is it possible for a doctor to determine if ovary can be salvaged without attempting a cystectomy first. Please advise. Thank you.

5.5 cm is a very small cyst for a ovarian removal, but then it depends on the nature of the cyst, its character and what type of cyst it is
