Nissen funduplocation
When any patient is candidate for Nissen funduplocation? I have irritation in my throat since 6 months. I don't have heartburn or regurgitation. Just throat issue. My endoscopy report mentions lax les and reflux esophagitis la grade a. Can I recover through medication only? Or every patient need requires surgery who are facing problem of gerd?

Hello, Greetings ! I hope you are better now with the medicines your doctor would have advised. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is an accepted surgical treatment for GERD, in patients who have failed to respond to medical line of management. However, this surgery will not guarantee you symptom free days for rest of your life! unless ,you start taking measures with respect to your routine life style. if you continue to experience symptoms , you will need a 24 hour pH manometry, which will measure the number of refluxes per 24 hours. If the number of acid refluxes are significant, then Fundoplication may help you. Life style modifications which will benefit you are : Maintain a healthy weight. Stop smoking and alcohol intake if you do Elevate the head of your bed to 30 degrees while resting Don't lie down immediately after a meal. Eat food slowly and chew thoroughly. Avoid foods and drinks that trigger reflux. Avoid tight-fitting clothing. take measures to stay calm if you are an anxious person. hope this helps. best regards, Dr.Sunay N.Bhat
