Your symptoms for the last 3 monthsâdifficulty passing stools, excessive straining, incomplete or uncomfortable bowel movements and associated stress/headachesâare suggestive of chronic constipation or a functional bowel-movement disorder. Regular night-shift work can disturb sleep, meal timing, hydration and bowel habits, which may aggravate constipation. Persistent straining should not be ignored, as it can also contribute to haemorrhoids and anal discomfort. The headaches may be worsened by stress, poor sleep or dehydration, although they should not automatically be attributed to constipation.
Next Steps
The priority is to establish a regular and comfortable bowel routine and identify whether the difficulty is mainly due to hard stools, irregular bowel habits or difficulty with evacuation. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the condition can be assessed according to Apana Vata, Agni and Koshta, and treatment can then be individualised rather than simply suppressing the symptoms. Health Tips
Try to maintain a consistent bowel routine even with night shifts. Take adequate fluids throughout your working hours, include fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and suitable natural fibre sources, and maintain regular physical activity. Do not ignore the urge to pass stool, and avoid sitting on the toilet for prolonged periods or repeatedly straining. Adequate sleep after your night shift is also important. If you develop blood in the stool, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, progressive abdominal swelling, unexplained weight loss or inability to pass stool/gas, seek medical evaluation promptly. Thank you
I understand, 3 months of constipation with night shifts is very stressful and can cause headache and mental tiredness.
This is Vibandha due to Vata vitiation from Ratri-jagarana and irregular routine.
Next Steps
For now:
• Fix bowel time, even on night shifts - warm water early morning, don't strain • Add fiber, fruits, warm water, 1 tsp ghee at night, avoid junk, tea, late heavy meals • 15 min walk, stress management, proper sleep on weekends
.
