Meningococcal vaccine is given to protect against an organism called Neiseria Meningitidis, which is known to cause meningitis, septicemia and pneumonia. Meningococcal vaccines are recommended only for certain high-rise conditions and situations such as international travel, during a disease outbreak, for children undergoing chemotherapy or for individuals with an immunodeficiency.
