We were going through routine investigations for my father while planning his cataract surgery when we came across his low haemoglobin 7.8g/dl with low RBC count of 4.48. He has lost 10kgs but over a period of 1 and half yrs. Other than that he has no complaints. What could be the possible causes of his anaemia and what should we rule out?

There are different types of anemia namely:
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Vitamin deficiency anemia
- Anemia of chronic disease
- Aplastic anemia
- Anemias associated with bone marrow disease
- Hemolytic anemias
- Sickle cell anemia
- Other anemias
I would advise you to meet a hematologist so that he can be examined and undergo investigations such as TIBC, Transferrin saturation, peripheral smear, etc to find the underlying cause and have it treated accordingly
