Life after angioplasty. Myths and facts. Q1.what is the meaning of angioplasty Ans1. Angioplasty is a cardiac procedure where blockages in blood supply of heart is opened with a metallic stent inside the blood vessels.( just like opening a blocked pipe) Q2. When do we require angioplasty. Ans. Most commonly after a heart attack , sometimes in cases of heart failure and angina( not controlled on medicines) Q3. Is angioplasty an operation? Ans. Technically it is not. Since there is no use of anaesthesia, no scalpel, no opening of chest or heart. A small needle puncture is done in the hand. Through it the catheter and stent is taken to heart and implanted. Q5. How long does this procedure takes Ans. Usually about half an hour. Q6. Is there any risk associated with angioplasty. Ans. Yes. No procedure of the heart is absolutely risk free. About 1%risk to life is involved. But remember, not doing what is required may have higher risk ultimately. The whole purpose of the procedure is to reduce your risk. Q7. Why is angioplasty expensive when govt. has fixed price of stents to 32000. Ans . Because the hardware required to take stent to the heart is costly. We can not swallow a stent like medicine. Catheter, wires, balloons are required during the procedure which make the total procedure costly. Also the cost of machine with which it is done is in crores. Also pay some respect to the expertise of the doctor.! Q8.How long rest is required after angioplasty. Ans. Varies from patient to patient. But usually not more than one week. Q9. Is there any possibility of stent getting disloged from its position. Ans. No. Never. Not possible at all. Q10.My house is on 1stfloor. Can I walk stairs post angioplsty after getting discharged from hospital Ans. Yes you can. As i said stent can not get disloged with jolts or anything Q11.What diet precautions should be done post angioplasty Ans. I would suggest a healthy diet for all human beings. No special food. Never make separate food preparation for such patients. Let them eat what all eat in family. And all should try to eat healthy. High fibre/ fruits/ veggies. Less fats/oils/ bakery/ sugar.Thats all. Q12.After how long can i start my professional work after angioplasty. Ans. With in a week. Maximum 2 weeks for some patients after a large heart attack. Thats more than enough. Q13.After how long can i start my excercises. Ans. As i said get back to routine work / schedule and excercises with in 2 weeks. Q14.What sort of excercises should i do. Ans. Do aerobic excercises like walking/ cycling/ treadmill. Do not strain too much. Build up your stamina gradually and increase work out. Better to avoid weight lifting and strenous excercise for first few months. Q15.What is the lifespan of my stent Ans. Its life long. You have to take good care of it. Q16.How do I take good care of it. And Is there chances of getting my stent blocked again. Ans. 2-5 % chances that there may be reblockages in stent with time. Healthy life style/ diet/ excercise/ timely medicines and control of blood sugar prevent that. Its same as if you drive rashly, higher chances of having an accident..!! Q17. Can i have CT scan / MRI done if required after having angioplasty Ans. Yes surely. Stenting has no interference with MRI / CT scans. Q18.How long do i need to take medicines post angioplasty. Ans. Strict medicines for 1 year. Thereafter 1-2 medicines life long. You would require medicines lifelong after a heart attack anyhow. Q19.What happens to the stent after about a year Ans. Natural skin grows over the stent, and it becomes natural part of the body. It is no longer a foreign body. Same as skin grows after an abrasion on your elbow. Q20.What is better between angioplasty and bypass Ans. They are not competitors or alternatives of each other. In some conditions angioplasty is better, in some bypass. Depends up on the clinical situation/ diabetes /and degree of disease. - [ ] Himanshu yadav( DM cardiology).
