In an obstructed kidney because of stone,  there might be infected urine collected above the stone. This urine may turn into pus which is full of bacteria. When we see such pus draining from above we abandon further surgery as the chance of going into sepsis or septicaemia becomes much higher. We put a stent and come out. The stent helps the dirty infected urine to drain from above and within 1-2weeks the system  becomes clear. It is much safer and easier to take out the stone  then.
