I want to quit alcohol
I'm a Software Engineer, I work from Home. Since 1.5 years I've been consuming alcohol every alternative day. It is badly affecting my productivity. If I drink today, I won't get cravings tomorrow unless there's any special occasion but the day after tomorrow I'll again get cravings. I tried to stop myself but no luck. My CAGE score is 3, C-1, A-1, G-1, E-0. Please suggest any over the counter medicine. Thanks a lot

The first step in de addiction is that the person should be accepting that addiction is affecting him/her. I congratulates you that you have completed the first step. Since, I don't have much deeper details required to recommend anything curated for you so I will be providing some general guidance and suggestions. It's important to note that seeking professional help from a healthcare provider or addiction specialist is crucial in addressing alcohol-related concerns. They can assess your situation comprehensively and provide appropriate guidance and treatment options tailored to your specific needs. Alcohol misuse can have detrimental effects on both physical and mental health, as well as overall productivity. While over-the-counter medications are not typically recommended for treating alcohol dependence or cravings, there are a few general strategies you can try: 1. Set clear goals: Determine why you want to reduce or quit drinking and set specific, achievable goals for yourself. This will help you stay motivated. 2. Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups who can provide encouragement and understanding during your journey. Consider attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or similar support meetings. 3. Develop healthy coping mechanisms: Find alternative ways to cope with stress or emotions that do not involve alcohol. Engaging in hobbies, exercise, meditation, or talking to a therapist can be beneficial. 4. Avoid triggers: Identify situations, people, or places that may tempt you to drink and try to avoid them. This can help reduce cravings and make it easier to stay on track. 5. Establish a routine: Structure your day with productive activities, including work, exercise, hobbies, and relaxation. This can help fill the void left by alcohol and keep you occupied. Remember, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide appropriate guidance and support for your specific situation. They may recommend a comprehensive treatment plan, which could include therapy, counseling, medication (if necessary), and ongoing monitoring to address your alcohol consumption effectively. Don't hesitate to seek help as early as possible. Your well-being and productivity are important, and professional assistance can make a significant difference in overcoming alcohol-related challenges.

Hello, What I have found to work successfully for patients of addiction is to find a healthier vice! One of my patients during my internship was put on medicines for substance abuse, but we encouraged him to find a hobby which made him very happy - helped him achieve a state of flow. He was good in music so we urged him to pursue that in his pass time. He played guitar - we and his family encouraged and supported him with that. He started playing guitar more often, he would completely immerse himself in that whenever he had free time. Eventually with help of Medicines, Therapy and Music, he overcame his addiction. The last I heard about him, he was sober. We often turn to an addiction either out of curiosity, or because we think we might drown our grief and stress in being intoxicated. But that is very counterproductive. Find a new vice - something good, that makes you sooooo Happy that you won't need alcohol. Additionally- please do visit a Psychiatrist who can prescribe you a medicine. There is no OTC medication for addiction. With medicine, therapy and effort, you'll be free of cravings. All the best!

Hello, To stop consuming alcohol, you first need to understand your relationship with drinking. You may need social support, consistent self-care, and new routines that can help redirect your mind. Regarding your CAGE scores, this test alone should not be used to self-diagnose a problem and the appropriate professional should help you to understand your results. You can work on yourself with understanding the precipitating factors and aggravating factors.
Next Steps
If you are unable to get the results from your efforts then consider professional help. Thanks
