Hyperthyroidism never develops suddenly. Patient usually presents with long standing palpitations and weight loss with exophthalmous(protruding eyes), over few months to year before they present to any doctors. Very rarely small subclinical nodules in thyroid gland may becomes symptomatic early.. Thyroid function test can be done just to rule as a cause of palpitations.. No issue if you do it.
