Head injury due to accident
Hi, its been almost more than 20 days my husband met with a car accident, earlier he was not able to speak up properly words are like fumbling saying something which has no meaning, some times recognising somebody, actually he do not remember anything, now he is improving day by day started conversation over the phone & atleast recognising his parents, but not able to recall any incidents of his life, but sometimes recalling few names but forgets easily, he knew that he do not remember he trying to recall & asking what who!! I guess he is recognising faces but says Don't remember name, I have a question that will he be able to recall all his past incidents automatically, doctors said that he will be fine with a month or two. Pls suggest what should we do at this time, will he recover automatically day by day. His GCS was 10/15.

Sorry to hear about the car accident. The symptoms which you mentioned are mostly caused due to the affect of neurons in the cerebral cortex (brain). This leads to forgetfulness (amnesia) in most individuals. You need to know that amnesia is broadly of 2 types. 1.Anterograde type - where the individual forgets about his past. 2.Retrograde type- where the individual cannot remember or memorise new things. Can your husband memorise new things ? Does he remember the events that happened after the accident? The extent of memory recovery depends on various factors such as the site of injury, force of impact during the accident and the time taken for him to be hospitalised after the accident. Usually memory recovery is 40 to 70 percent in most of the individuals. A 100 percent recovery might take months-years to recover but it depends on various factors as mentioned above.
Next Steps
Try discussing past events with him. Encourage him to recall past events. Try to improve his current memory by techniques such as memory games. He needs adequate rest and do not ask him too much about past events as it might cause anxiety and depression (he might feel bad as he is unable to recall the past). He needs adequate support from the family members.
Health Tips
Consult a neurologist or a neuro psychiatrist if symptoms persist
