Gripe water is most often given to babies in the first year of life, as that is when symptoms of colic or overall fussiness occurs... But the ingredients in gripe water can vary based on the brand and where you buy it. There are many different types available. Previously, gripe water consisted of sugar and alcohol, sometimes in startlingly high amounts. Today, it tends to consist of ingredients such as agave, purified water, and ginger flavor.
Next Steps
Although different gripe waters vary, most of the time, gripe water is just another way to describe sugar water. Sugar water has been used in hospitals as a way to soothe babies and reduce pain during procedures, but it's never used in regular doses over long periods of time.
