It is equally important to keep eyes closed for 2-5 minutes after instilling any drop for maximum efficacy.

Every Drug has its Action....
putting over the counter drops & ointments will wash off the effective concentration of drug.
Eventually drug to drug Reaction can occur.
So its ideal to put a gap in putting eye drops.
