Yes they are safe but regarding efficacy there are questions. The reason we generally prefer brands is because of efficacy only. But this is a very controversial topic and in government setups only generic medicines are prescribed. The reason is easy availability and supply by government agencies. I have often come about generic antibiotics not having adequate effect, also anti-platelets and anti- arrhythmics as well as other life saving medicines are better taken as branded products.

You should take whatever medicine your physician advises, ask then if they can give you the generic medicine for the same, if they advise you against it you should follow his/her advice.
