GALLSTONE RECURRENCE
My son aged 1yr 6 months had single gallstone sized about 2 mm from fetus without any symptom detected by multiple usgs 6 months ago. Surgeon had prescribed udiliv 150 for the dissolution by medication and also recommended scan for the observation of the current status of the stone . Obeying his recommendation we performed usgs from 2 different diagnostic centres. There they confirmed the stone had been dissolved completely. Now the question is can gallstone recur again after this dissolution?

It’s great to hear that the gallstone has completely dissolved with medication and your child is doing well. In most cases, especially when the gallstone is small and asymptomatic (as in your child’s case), medical dissolution with ursodeoxycholic acid (Udiliv) is effective. However, yes, gallstones can recur, even after successful dissolution — though recurrence is not common, especially if the child remains asymptomatic and has no underlying risk factors.
Next Steps
Continue with routine follow-up ultrasounds once every 6–12 months initially to monitor for recurrence. Keep your child well-hydrated and ensure a healthy, balanced diet — although diet plays a smaller role in infant gallstones, good habits help long term. No treatment is needed now if the stone has fully dissolved and there are no symptoms.
Health Tips
If any symptoms appear in the future — such as vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, or pale stools — consult your pediatrician promptly. In rare cases where gallstones recur and cause symptoms, surgery may be considered later in childhood.

Yes, gallstones can recur even after dissolution. Factors like genetics, diet, and underlying conditions can contribute to their re-formation. Regular follow-up with a doctor is advisable.

Gallstones are uncommon in infancy but are increasingly diagnosed due to improved diagnostic facilities of ultrasound and access to health care services. The baby is asymptomatic and in absence of underlying disease like hemolytic problems, jaundice or any other apparent congenital problems it seems fair to advise that you should relax. Hopefully, it should not recur. I assume no other risk factor has been identified to make us believe he should have a recurrence
