Hi, I am Dr Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT The area you are describing —corresponds to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region and adjacent preauricular soft tissues. Intermittent pain in this area, especially associated with teeth grinding (bruxism), is a common presentation of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Possible Causes: Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD): Often triggered or worsened by habits like grinding or clenching teeth (bruxism), especially during stress or sleep. Muscle strain or spasm: The muscles around the jaw and face can become tense due to repeated grinding. Referred otalgia: Sometimes jaw joint or dental issues can mimic ear pain, as the TMJ lies very close to the external ear canal.
Next Steps
Avoid chewing hard foods and gum. Apply warm compresses over the painful area 2–3 times daily. Practice jaw relaxation exercises and avoid excessive talking or wide mouth opening. Use a night guard (if grinding at night is confirmed) – a dental evaluation may be needed. Consult ENT and Dentist/Oral Surgeon – for confirmation and targeted therapy if the pain persists.
Health Tips
If the symptoms worsen, persist for more than 2–3 weeks, or interfere with daily activities, you should get evaluated to rule out other causes like ear infections, impacted wisdom teeth, or more severe TMJ disorders.
