1. Less tear formation
2. Reduced secretion of an oily substance from some glands in your eyelids.
Less tears can be due to problem in your tear glands which can be a accompaniment to certain arthritic problems.
Reduced oily substance is due to less functioning of meibomian glands in your lids, or change in consistency of the oily substance, so that it can't come out of the glands. Or due to some diseases of the eyelid margin called blepharitis.
