Doubt on ADHD
I have difficulty in paying attention. I Can't sit and concentrate on work in a place for long time. I feel very overwhelmed when a task is given to me. I'm on bench list and can be fired anytime because I was not able to complete any project before Deadline. I have insomnia from last 6 years. My energy levels are always dull. I feel like I'm on the verge of going crazy. Is this ADHD or something else ? I always had poor grades in school as well. I was very hesitant to take Counselling. Please guide.

Hi, It sounds like you're experiencing a range of challenging symptoms, including difficulty concentrating, overwhelming feelings with tasks, persistent insomnia, and low energy levels, which can significantly impact your daily life and work performance. While these symptoms could be associated with ADHD, they may also suggest underlying issues such as anxiety, depression, or chronic stress. Given your history of poor grades in school and ongoing struggles, it would be beneficial to seek a professional evaluation for a comprehensive assessment. A mental health professional can help determine if ADHD or another condition is at play and guide you toward appropriate treatment options. Although seeking counseling might feel intimidating, taking that initial step could lead to valuable insights and coping strategies to improve your situation. Additionally, addressing insomnia and energy issues through lifestyle changes, such as improved sleep hygiene, regular physical activity, and time management techniques, can contribute to better focus and overall well-being. Remember, you don’t have to navigate this alone—support is available, and taking action can be a positive move toward feeling better.

Hi Having difficulty paying attention may mean you have a short attention span. Whenever you are overwhelmed when a task is given, break it into chunks and do easier task first gradually move to difficult task which will give you a sense of accomplishment. If you feel you have low energy take a general health checkup and consult a dietician. You may not be going through Adhd but it could be performance anxiety. We have to speculate the reasons for poor grades in school only via counselling.

Hi, I can understand that you have been experiencing some difficulties with attention and procrastination. It’s great that you have taken the first step in seeking help. ADHD is neurodevelopment disorder that can affect attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. I would like to suggest you to get assessed for by a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist. It can be easily done with the help of some standardised screening tools like Conners adult ADHD rating scales (CAARS) and adult ADHD self report scales (ASRS) to help identify the potential of ADHD symptoms. Remember ADHD is a treatable condition and with the right resources you can help manage your symptoms. Please reach out to a professional for the same.

Hi....Please consult a Psychiatrist to receive a medical diagnosis. ADHD is usually diagnosed at an early age. It is unlikely that you went all the way up through your education and job without ever getting formally diagnosed. I believe your mental health has taken a toll from past so many years that you don't even remember, since when you developed these issues. I believe your present work environment is serving as an immediate stressor and a trigger to your underlying condition. Insomnia from past 6 years indicate a poor state of your mental health which needs to be further investigated in a therapeutic setting. Your poor grades, lower energy levels, lack of focus, concentration can be attributed to other factors as well. You need to take therapy to address your issues from the root.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychologist. CBT along with Interpersonal Guidance and Career Counselling.

Thank you for sharing what you’re going through—it takes courage to reach out, and I’m here to help you. From what you've described, it does sound like you’re experiencing several symptoms that could align with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), particularly the inattentive type. Challenges with sustained attention, difficulty meeting deadlines, feeling overwhelmed by tasks, and a long history of these difficulties—including poor academic performance—are common indicators of ADHD in adults. However, other conditions such as anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders can also contribute to similar difficulties. Your insomnia and low energy levels are significant concerns. Chronic sleep deprivation can exacerbate problems with focus, energy, and mood, making it harder to manage day-to-day tasks. Overwhelm and emotional distress can compound these struggles, creating a vicious cycle.

Health Tips
You’re not “on the verge of going crazy.” Your struggles are valid, and they stem from real challenges that can be managed with the right support. Therapy, medical care, and small changes in daily habits can create significant improvements over time. You’ve already taken the first step by reaching out—now it’s about taking the next steps with support and patience.
