Dog Bite and Rabies
I was bit by a stray dog today and immediately went to a doctor who advised 5 dosages of Rabipur and tetanus. I took the 1st dose today and tetanus and scheduled for the remaining dose. The doctor's approach was very casual and said that this 5 Rabipur doses is all I need. But I read that it takes 2 weeks to develop antibodies and I might still be at the risk of rabies. I didn't want to take any chances so I took second opinion and also I was told that 5 Rabipur shots would suffice. But shouldn't i take immunoglobulin shots in the wound as well? Please enlighten me.

The need for immunoglobulin  depends on the severity of dog bite , usually deeper wounds with bleeding require immunoglobulin. There are 2 types of immunoglobulin one made from horse and other is human. However it's advisable to go for Human rabies immunoglobulin as there is less incidence of reaction .

Hello..... Actually rabipur starts working after 7 days of infection... Protection till then is given by immunoglobulin.. So antirabies immunoglobulin injection is given on the first day... But availability of immunoglobulin is less.. So you have to go the higher hospital... Consult doctor...
