Covid 19 symptoms but tested negative

Hi, I have lost sense of smell and taste and there's mild cold and weakness since 5 days. I gt rt pcr test done and tested negative. Is this correct or is there some strain that's going undetected. Likewise my MIL is having weakness,mild cold and intermittent fever. She also tested negative and it's been a week since she has isolated.so my concern here is are we infected and got missed in rt pcr or is it fine. We both live in different location. Please help and advise.
