Most of the cough syrups contain Anti Histamines which cause drowiness. Cough syrups are prescribed to facilitate easing out secretions from your airways (which are sticky and difficult to be coughed out). Avoid them in daytime and take at bed time so that you have a peaceful sleep keeping you fully alert during work time. One dose during night is enough to liquify thick secretions and get expoctorated.
