Composite dental filling side effects
Hello Doctor, I heard that silver filling consists of mercury and because of that some side effects are there, so we need to go for composite fillings. I have silver filling for one of my teeth for past 17 years but I dont have any health problems till now. As composite filling made up of plastic, I came to know that from some atricles there are chances of getting so many health issues like thyroid, cancer etc. Could you please give clarity on this?

The composite filling is not made up of plastic. It is made up of silica particles or other ceramic material added to a resin base. And it would not cause thyroid or any type of cancer.
Next Steps
For now if you’re not facing any problem no need to get it replaced.

Yes. Amalgam fillings contains mercury which is considered toxic and these fillings eventually get discolored. Although, amalgaum fillings were once considered to the best restorative material, advances in dentistry have come up with a lot of biocompatable & aesthetic (tooth coloured) restorative materials, like composits, glass ionomers etc.
Next Steps
If that amalgam filling is not hurting or troubling you, just ignore it. If you are consered about the aesthetics you can get it changed.
Health Tips
Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing teeth regularly, flossing once a day, and cutting down on sugar.

Recent advances in Composite restorations has more advantages, like esthetic, high tensile strength, can be easily polished,,no plaque accumulation, provided if it is restored under ideal conditions, like, using rubber dam,min depth of cavity, restorative principles, the only disadvantage is discoloration over a period of time.

Now a days mercury fillings are not prefered as they cause mercury intoxication. But if it is not causing any trouble then leave it as it is. And it's completely your choice if you want to get it replaced. Still have queries then please consult with doctor online or offline for better guidance and treatment options.

Mercury restoration can be leak and absorb by the body, which can cause Mercury intoxication, otherwise if the restoration is fit and healthy than it's ok. My best advice will be keep it the way it is or you can also opt. For Composite filling by removing Mercury restoration using best isolation technique.
