Chronic ITP
I was diagnosed with ITP in Jul 2016 when my platelet count had dropped to 5000 after a laparoscopic surgery. I had immediately undergone IVIG treatment for 5 days after platelet transfusions didn't help. However I relapsed and had to then take a 3 month course of prednisone (Omnacortil). Until the end of march 2017, the counts were normal. However, starting April this year, I seem to have relapsed again. My current platelet count as of yesterday, 15th May is 31,000 and continuously decreasing. The haematologist has advised two immediate courses of action - either a course of corticosteroids Decmax + Immunosuppressant Azathioprine for 2 months OR IV injection of Rituximab + Vincristine, once a week for a month. I am a little wary of both since my last tryst with steroids led me to gain 10 kgs over 3 months, while as chemo drugs the latter could be toxic for my system. Please advise.
