With so many co-morbidities like diabetes and hypothyroidism along with hernias and post- surgical adhesions , constipation may be a complex problem . Control of diabetes and hypothyroidism with liberal use of stool softeners , bulk forming agents and laxatives can help . In extreme cases of low colonic transit , surgical option may be tried , however the outcomes are not always very great
