Body ache  + osteoporosis +crohns diseas
My mother is suffering from crohns disease detected in 2012. Since then she was administered steroid (prednisolone) for around 6 years. It was gradually tapered and stopped by the consulting gastroenterologist in 2018. She is constantly suffering from body ache and pain and was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a Dexa scan. She was advised strong dose of calcium and vitamin, which caused a flare up of her IBS and she had to discontinue them. Further she was prescribed a yearly injection (zolephos) which needs to be administered in a hospital with precautions. We are worried that it might cause side effects due to her Crohns problem. Currently she has body ache and muscle pains mostly in the thigh and the legs. Please suggest what should be the necessary steps of her treatment so that her crohns doesnt get flared up again. Thank you in advance.

Osteoporosis is due to her Crohn's disease and aggravated by the steroids. She needs restoration of bone mineral by calcium and Vitamin D supplements. She may also require Inj. Teriparatide.
Next Steps
Please visit an Orthopedic surgeon.

She requires lifestyle modifications such that her body works in a way that is less stressful to the muscles and joints. This includes rest and doing things in an ergonomic and disciplined manner.
Next Steps
require a supervised intervention which will go for long.

Hello Practo User, Crohn's disease led to osteoporosis. She will have to take calcium and vitamin D for her osteoporosis. If you are afraid that crohn's might be  aggrevated by supplements, please consult your Gastroenterology Doctor and aks him to suggest suitable supplements accordingly. At the outset both problems have to be addressed. Regards.
