Behavioral disorder with substance abuse
I am a doctor. My son is addicted to cannabis. He also drinks, I don't know how much because he stays independent of us. He says he's suffering from social anxiety disorder and is trying to treat himself. He is very suspicious in nature, thinks negative about everyone. He left his job almost 2 years back (I think he had issues there with boss and colleagues) and is managing with his deposits. He's adopted two stray dogs. He has commitment phobia and had a liv in but not ready to get married. He has weak will power. Smokes too. His Mom is madly in love with him. He doesn't do any chore for us, on the contrary we are doing things for him.He won't go for any consultation and can't be forced. Could it be Psychosis? We are deeply concerned about him and don't know what to do.

Hello Sir Addiction is a disease not a habit. Addiction change behaviour patterns and can change personality paytern from previous ones.its not a psychosis. He is not understanding that he is harming himself, reason is he knows its painful to stay away from substance and he is not ready to face the pain. That's why he is denying to seek help. Addiction is a family disease so its obvious that the whole family will get affected. There are different modes of treatment for addiction, like rehabilitation, detoxification and psychological interventions. At present i dont think he will be ready to go to any rehab. So we cam start with psychotherapeutic help. It will help your child to develop acceptance and motivation to quit. We should start from somewhere, and this mode of treatment will be more acceptable for patient.
Next Steps
consulting a clinical psychologist will be advisable. And not only patient's but also family must undergo some therapy sessions
