Hello, I understand your concern At this age, most babies can usually sit independently for a few seconds to minutes. However, there is a range in normal development, and some children may achieve this a little later. If these are present, it shows that some developmental milestones are progressing well: Rolling over both ways Reaching out and grasping objects Bearing weight on legs when held upright Responds to sounds and voice Makes babbling or cooing sounds This may indicate Mild gross motor delay-Possibly due to lack of opportunity (e.g., not enough tummy time or time on the floor) Could be hypotonia or other neuromuscular issues if delay is more global or persistent
Next Steps
Encourage tummy time multiple times a day when baby is awake Let baby sit on the floor with minimal support and place toys around to encourage reaching and balance Reduce use of walkers, swings, and prolonged time in carriers Use floor-based play to help develop core muscles
Health Tips
Red flags: Not rolling over by 6–7 months Poor head control Not bearing weight on legs Poor interaction or eye contact No vocalization Monitor for next 4–6 weeks If no progress, refer for Developmental assessment and Physiotherapy to improve tone and strength

An 8.5-month-old baby not sitting up independently from a lying position, but able to sit when placed, is generally within the normal range of development. "It's common for babies at 8.5 months to need some assistance to get into a sitting position. Continue to provide opportunities for her to practice sitting and encourage floor play on her tummy and back. Most babies master sitting independently from lying down between 8 and 11 months
