The causes of anosmia( loss of smell sensation) can be broadly classified into obstructive and degenerative and traumatic causes. Obstruction due  any cause such as polyps, tumor can be treated by relieving the obstruction. In traumatic causes smell sensation usually returns after early treatment. In degenerative cases there is no reversal of anosmia once degeneration of olfactory mucosa has taken place.
