Warts on my thumb

I have warts on my thumb which is not painful nor itchy. How did i get the wart? And how can i get rid of it. Is it because a month back i was at the hospital taking care of my family member which i had to be in and out of the ICU. Would that be the cause of infection? Please suggest some medication for it
