Hi yes, for cough and cold you can definitely use warm compress.It is beneficial.You can also do hot water fomentation.Simply take a cloth and dip it in some hot water(not very hot),you can add some balm to the water and apply the wet cloth to your face and chest.If any pain in face near sinuses, do the fomentation there also.Will definitely help in improving your symptoms.Hope this helps.
